내가 1997년 처음으로 합기도(Aikido)를 시작했을 때, 경찰대학의 유도 사범님은 내게 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
'아이키도를 왜 하냐? 유도의 호신술 본에 다 있는데. 합기도(Hapkido)를 더 이상 하기 싫으면 유도를 하렴.'
위 사범님과는 아직도 스스로의 깊은 존경을 담아 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있다. 하지만, 당시 일본을 이겨야만 한다는 게 자연체득되어 있던 당시의 일반적인 자랑스런 한국인으로서, 그는 그저 내가 일본색 짙어 보이는 무도를 하는 게 달갑지 않으셨던 거다. 만일 사범님께 '유도도 일본 무도 잖아요?'라고 물으면, '한국 유도가 더 낫다'라고 하시거나 아마도 한판 엎어치기 또는 목조르기로 기절시켜 버리실 거다. (사실 사범님은 일본 강도관의 지도자 연수 때에 본의 연무로 1위를 하신 경험도 있으시다.)
When I firstly began Aikido training in 1997, a Judo master in the Korea National Police University told me like this.;
'Why need to do Aikido? Katas in Judo are very similar to Aikido. Just do Judo if you don't want to do Hapkido anymore.'
He is still in very good relationship with my long-lasting honor. But as still a proud Korean willing to beat up Japanese, he didn't like me to do Aikido at the time. If you ask him 'Judo isn't also a Japanese MA?', he will answer 'Korean Judo is stronger than Japanese one.' or give you 'Ippon-dori seoinage' throws or even choke you out.

If you have experience in Aikido, you will notice it. It's very similar to Aikido! Maybe you also think like this.;'Humans are all the same in bone structure, there aren't many special ways to control opponents. Even if you see similarities, it's not suprising.'

위 링크에서 유도의 창시자 가노 지고로 선생의 아들이자, 당시 국제 유도연맹의 회장이었던 가노 리세이 선생이 '고신주츠(호신술)'이라는 책에 쓰신 서문에는 이렇게 쓰여 있다.;
In this page, you can read the preface of the book 'Goshin Jutsu' by the founder of Judo Jigoro Kano sensei. It reads;

"(전략)-이 책의 저자인 도미키 겐지 교수는 와세다 대학 교수로서 유도에 대한 깊은 이해를 갖고 있으며, 또한 유도의 관점에서 본 합기유술의 연구에도 깊은 조예가 있다. 이번 호신술의 본을 고안함에 있어, 그가 위원회를 선도하는 역할을 맡았다. 그러므로, 나는 이 책이 호신술로서의 유도를 배우는 수련생들에게 최고의 가이드북이 배리라 믿어 의심치 않는다.'-- 1958년 12월 가노 리세이
"Kano Shihan made every effort possible to complete Judo as a modern physical education, but could not yet systematize the self-defense aspect of Judo which is contained in the classical Jujutsu even though he did study it deeply. The fact he was very much concerned about the self-defense aspect of Judo is clearly seen from the fact that he sent some of his students to Sensei Ueshiba to study Aiki-Jujutsu and also invited an expert on Jojutsu to Kodokan for a seminar. Some of the self-defense techniques are incorporated into the Kime-no-Kata which is well known to all. After the WWII, quite a few Judokas abroad showed interest in the self-defense aspect of Judo, Kodokan organized a panel to create and publish the Kodokan Goshin Jutsu no Kata. As stated earlier, since the Kodokan had already started its study, it was fairly easy to reach consensus. The writer of this Book, Prof. Kenji Tomiki has deep understanding of Judo as Prof. of Waseda Univ. and also is an authority on research of Aiki-Jutsu in the light of Judo principles. In formulating the Goshin Jutsu no Kata, he played a leading role in the panel. I am firmly convinced, therefore, that this Book will become the best guidebook for all practioners of the self-defense Judo." -- Dec. 1958 Risei Kano

이것이 유도의 호신본이 그렇게도 (도미키류)합기도와 흡사했던 이유인 것이다!!
That's the reason WHY Judo's Goshin Jutsu so resembles Aikido(Tomiki style)!!

이제서야 10년간의 궁금증이 '확실히' 풀렸다.. 아아..
Now the 10-year question has been revealed.. aah..

p.s. 가노 지고로 선생의 유도에 대한 열정은 내 상상을 뛰어넘는다. 그는 자신이 마음 속에 담았던  유도의 완성을 보지 못하고 사망했다. 그는 '현재와 같이 경쟁에만 중심을 두는 유도는 반쪽짜리다.'라고 했다. 나는 그가 더 오래 살았다면 과연 (그가 바라던) 유도가 어떻게 완성되었을 지 궁금하다.
p.s. Enthusiasm of Jikoro Kano sensei's on Judo is beyond my expectation. He died before he finished his job. He quted 'Judo, emphasizing just on competitions like nowadys is just half of its perfection'. I want to see if he had lived longer, what Judo would like to be.
