매년 한국을 방문하시지만, 이상하게도 기회를 찾지 못하다가 오늘에서야 그 손을 잡아볼 수 있었다.
He regularly visits Korea, but I hardly could have got the chance to grip his wirst till today.

지도해주신 기술은 '기본기'이지만, 우케(受)로서 공격을 할 때 들어가는 각도, 자세 등 평소 간과하기 쉬운 것들을 짚어주셨다. 나게(投)로서의 몸놀림은 일반적인 입신(表),전환(裏)이 아닌 측면(側)기술을 보여주셨다.
He taught 'the basic', the right angle for getting into your partner, and stance. And he also showed sokumen tai-sabaki, which is not as usual as omote and ura but still very effective and easy to vary.

화려하진 않지만, 속이 꽉찬 느낌이라 해야 하나, 작은 체구이지만 매우 굳은 심지를 가지셨다는 느낌. 미소를 머금고 있지만 그 속에 숨겨진 카리스마를 언뜻언뜻 느낄 수 있었다.
His technique might not look magnificient, but you will feel 'an iron core' if you grip his wrist. He keeps smiling, stil shows hidden charisma in a flash.

서도(書道)의 선생님이시기도 하다.
He's also a teacher of calligraphy.

시야를 넓힐 기회를 풍부하게 제공해주시는 스승님께 다시 한 번 감사를.
I should give a deep appreciation to Yoon sensei, who always gives us opportunities to broaden our view.

Aikido 7th dan(an uchideshi under O-sensei), Kyoshi in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shintoryu, an exponent of Taichi and Gojyu-ryu Karate. Chief of Sugawara Martial Atrs Institute. A publisher of the Traditional Aikido by the late SAITO Morihiro sensei.

  화려한 프로필을 제쳐두고서도 스가와라 선생을 특별하게 만드는 것은 그의 무술에 대한 접근방식이라고 생각한다. 이번 주의 세미나중에(카토리신토류 세미나는 다음주), 그는 '실전용' 과 '건강용 또는 수련용' 기법을 엄밀히 구분했다. 나로서는, 직업상 아주 관심있게 볼 수 있었고, 좋은 공부가 되었다. 아이키도 계에서는, 크게 '강한 스타일'과 '부드러운 스타일'로 양분되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 전자의 대부분이 '그들의' 아이키도를 '실전에 효과적''거리에서 효과적'이라 표현할 때, 후자는 '진정한','기에 기초한' 등으로 말하곤 한다. 하지만 적지 않은 수의 사람들이 '왜?'에 대해서는 설명을 못하는 듯 하다.

More than his highlighted profile, you will notiice what makes Sugawara sensei special is his approach to MA. During seminar this week(TSKS seminar will be held next week), he made a clear distinction between 'wazas for real' and 'wazas for health or practise'. For me, I like it because of my profession. In Aikido world, you can see mostly 2 groups, 'Hard style Aikido' and 'Soft style Aikido'. And most of the fomer calls 'their' Aikido as 'COMBAT EFFECTIVE','STREET EFFECTIVE', on the contrary most of the later does it as 'AUTHENTIC','KI based', blah blah blah. But not small numbers of them doesn't seem to be able to explain 'WHY SO?'.

무도가이자 연구가로서의 스가와라 선생의 무도에 대한 넓은 지식과 깊은 통찰력은 이에 대한 균형을 잡고 '왜 그런지'에 대해 설명을 가능케 한다고 생각한다. 이런 점은 동화 속에 사는 사람들을 방지하기 위해서도 매우 중요하다. '왜' 이런 저런 걸 하는지 알아야만 한다.

Sugawara sensei's broad knoweldge and deep insight in MA as a researcher and budoka can make a balance and explain it. This is very important for preventing those who are living out there with fairy tales. You have to know WHY we are doing this and that.

특히 그의 문화인류학적 접근을 난 정말 좋아한다. 예를 들어, 이번에 그는 어떻게 '제3의 눈' 또는 '심안'으로 보는지에 대해서 설명했는데 사실 이것은 그저 다른 무술에서도 볼 수 있는 시선처리기법을 다른 방식으로 성명한 것에 불과할 수도 있다. 하지만, 그의 설명은 여기서 더 나아가 기도하는 자세의 의미, 세계 각지의 고대 유물에서 볼 수 있는 '눈 마크'의 기원까지로 거슬러 올라가는 식이다.

Especially his cultural anthropolgy approach on MA I love. For example, this time he explains 'how to see' with the '3rd eye' or 'eye of spirit'. Actually it can be just another varied explanation of me-tsuke in other MAs. But his explanation goes further to the meaning of a prayer pose, and the origin of the eye mark you can find in ancient remains over the world.

또한 무술가로서 그는 정말 깨끗한 동작을 보여주는데, 어떻게 움직이는지 간파할 수가 없다. 그는 항상 '상대에게 집중할 것''불필요한 움직임을 제거할 것'을 강조한다.

Still as a martial artist he shows very clean movements. You can't sense how he moves. He always emphasizes 'concentration onto your partner' and 'cut away unnecessary moves'.

선생이 조아이와 쿠미조, 체술과 코가주츠(미국의 로버트 코가 선생이 아이키도를 기본으로 창안한 유명한 체포술)을 지도하시는 동안, 나는 그의 뒤에서 주의깊게 관찰하고 있었다.(이건 통역자로서의 아주 큰 메리트다.) 그가 너무도 안정되고 매끄럽고 가볍게 여기저기로 '순간이동'을 하는 걸 보면 감탄할 수 밖에 없을 것이다.

While he was teaching Jo-ai and Kumi-jo, Taijutsu and Kogajutsu(very famous Aikido-based arresting method found by Robert Koga in the U.S.), I kept watching him very closely from behind(this is an extreme advantage as a interpreter. ). You will be suprised by how he 'teleports' around in a so steady, smoothe and light manner.

In deep appreciation of the teaching by Sugawara sensei and Youn sensei.

전용선 대구도장장님의 초청으로 지난 9월 6일(토요일) 당일치기로 대구에 다녀왔습니다. 소년부 심사 및 성인부 수련을 한 번 맡아달라는 과분한 청에 2년 만에 대구행 버스에 몸을 실었습니다.
I had a 1-day vist to Deagu on Sep 6, on invitation from Jeon Daegu dojocho. He asked me to attend a children class test and adult class so I took a bus to the city in 2 years.

대구에 도착하자마자 식당에 들러 돼지국밥 한그릇. 역시 맛있습니다. 수도권에서는 왜그리 보기 힘든 음식인지.
지하철을 타고가려고 승차권을 뽑았더니, 카지노 칩이 하나 나와서 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 너무 귀여운 티켓인지라 사진을 찍고 싶었는데 촌놈 티 날까 싶어 꾹 참았습니다.
On arriving, I rushed to a restaurant and ordered a Doeji Gugbab(rice in pork-soup). Fantastic. I don't understand why it's difficult to see this delisious food around Seoul.
Suprised by a plastic token which looks like a casino chip at subway station. So cute that I wanted to take a picture, but strained myself not to show 'I'm a country boy'.

신매역 바로 앞에 위치한 아레나 스포츠 센터에 도착했습니다. 지하 1층에 위치한 대구도장은 정말 전국의 어느 도장을 뒤져봐도 손색없는 깔끔한 인테리어에 고급스러움이 좔좔 흘렀습니다. 정말 이런 도장을 갖고 싶다는 생각이 불끈 솟더군요.
The Daegu dojo placed in B1, Arena Sports Center by Sinmae station, it was so nice-equipped and luxurious I've ever seen. I really want to have a dojo like this someday.

소년부 수련을 참관했는데 아이들의 해맑은 모습과 수련을 참관하는 학부모들의 모습이 정말 보기 좋았습니다. 해외의 소년부 수련을 참관한 경험이 있지만, 그보다 훨씬 체계적이고 잘된 커리큘럼을 갖고 있었습니다.
Watching children class, smiles from kids and parents watching their kids warmly, they were so nice to see and feel. The dojo has a very good curriculum even better to the dojos in the other countries I've been.


수련종료 후 바로 심사가 이어졌는데, 방금까지 그렇게 웃고 떠들던 아이들이 맞나 싶을 정도로 무서운 집중력을 보여주는 아이들이 종종 눈에 띄었습니다. 오히려 성인보다 더 나아 보였습니다. 심사 결과를 발표하고 띠를 나누어줄 때 아이들의 기뻐하는 모습을 보니 '대구에 오길 잘 했다'는 생각이 들었습니다.
During the test right after the class, some kids showed unbelievable concentration even scarier than adult. I was glad to see the smiles of kids when I gave them new belts anouncing their names.

5시 반부터 1시간 반 동안 성인부 수련을 시작했습니다. 대구도장 수련생들의 실력은 전체적으로 높은 편에 속합니다. 그만큼 도장장께서 공을 들이신다는 것이겠지요. 좌기 호흡법, 양손잡기, 뒤에서 한손잡고 목조르기 등의 공격에 대한 술기를 하고 있자니 시간이 금새 흘렀습니다.
The adlut class was held from 5:30 pm for 1 1/2 hours. The level of Daegu dojo is high which shows devotion of Jeon dojocho. Time passed like lightening with Zagi kokyuho, Ryotedori, Ushiro katatedori and kubijime.

성인부 수련생들과 뒷풀이하러 간 곳이 예상치 못한 으리으리한 패밀리 레스토랑이어서 놀랐습니다. 다음에는 그냥 짜장면에 탕수육만 사주시면 제 위장이 덜 놀랄 듯 합니다.
Another suprise by a huge family-restaurnant  for a dinner with students. Cheap Chinese food is O.K. next time, sensei.

늦은 후기입니다.
Sorry for the late report.

2008년 연무대회에서 2년만에 야마와키 선생을 뵐 수 있어서 아주 기뻤습니다. 2006년 연무대회시 해외에서의 생활에 대한 많은 조언을 해주시고 관심가져주신 것을 언제나 감사히 생각하고 있습니다.
또한 매년 전국의 수련생들이 한 가족으로서 함께 한다는 것 역시 아주 기쁜 일입니다.
I was so glad to meet Yamawaki sensei in 2 years. I always appericiate his advice just before my depature to TL in 2006.
And it's also great to meet students from all over Korea as a family every year.

승단심사에서는 4단 3명(전용선 대구도장장, 남광희 안산도장장님, 오철호 선배)가 예년에 이어 배출되었고, 2단 5명, 초단 20명이 합격했습니다. 야마와키 선생은 제게 귀엣말로 '2-4단 응시자의 실력이 일본보다 오히려 높다. 다수 처리기에서는 일본에서 보기 힘든 독특한 기술들도 나오는 것이 이채롭다'고 하셨습니다.
This year we have three new 4th dan(JEON Yong-seon(Daegu dojocho), NAM Kwang-hee(Ansan dojocho), OH Cheol-ho), five 2nd dan, 20 shodan. Yamawaki sensei gave me a wisper '2nd-4th dan attendants' level of skill is even better than Japan. And it's also colorful to see the rare techniques which are hardly seen in Japan during multi-attacker techniques.'

세미나가 종료된 직후 시작된 연무대회에서는 종전과는 달리 무기술의 연무가 많았습니다. 사회자를 한다는 핑계로 숨어있던 저를 야마와키 선생께서 우케로 지목하셨을 때는 마치 사형언도가 내려진 듯한 기분이었습니다만, 다행히 짧게 끝내주셨습니다. 56세의 선생도 여전히 보다 발전된 모습으로 변화하시는 것에 귀감을 받습니다.
In demonstration we could see a lot more buki-wazas than before. Yamawaki sensei gave me a death sentence picking me up as one of his ukes while I was hiding myself as MC. But mercifully he didn't last the demo that long.

끝으로 모두에게 이러한 자리를 만들어주시느라 애쓰시는 스승님께 감사의 말씀을 전합니다.
I give my deepest appreciation to Youn sensei, who always try hard to give us all he can do.

'이게 무슨 퀴퀴한 냄새야?'
코를 찡그리며 퀴퀴한 냄새의 진원지를 찾던 아내의 시선이 한곳에 멈췄다. 베란다에 걸려있는 하카마. 땀을 많이 흘리는지라 도복이야 항상 세탁한다지만, 하카마는 말리기만 하는 편인데, 빨고 나서 주름을 다시 잡는 게 힘들어서이기도 하지만, '하카마는 빠는 게 아니다'는 히로아키 선생의 가르침(?)을 충실히 따르기 위해서라는 좋은 핑계도 있다. 하지만 이번에는 나로서도 거역할 수 없을 퀴퀴함이라 고개를 푹 숙이며 세탁기로. 불행 중 다행인지 지금 가진 Xebec제 하카마는 100% 폴리에스테르라서 세탁기에 넣어도 주름 걱정 없어서 안심.

'What's this stench?'
Wife's eyes, frowning with the bad smell, serched its origin and stopped. The hakama hung on the porch. I always keep dougis clean, but I only keep the hakama dry. It's not only because it's so difficult to iron the skirt, but also I keep a lesson from Hiroaki sensei,'Don't wash your hakama'.. But this time, the overwhelming stench forced even me to take it to the machine. Out of the luck, the current Xebec hakama of mine is of 100% polyester, it's fine with machine-laundry.

야마시마 타케시 7단 선생을 비롯한 치요다구합기회와의 수련이 끝났다. 야마시마 선생은 65세, 故야마구치 세이고 선생의 제자이자, 신카게류 검술의 면허를 가지고 있기도 하다. 2년전 이시바시 선생의 후레아이숙과 치요다구합기회가 한국을 방문하면서 맺어진 인연은 윤익암(윤대현) 관장님의 치요다구합기회 주최 카시마 합숙으로, 다시 야마시마 선생의 한국방문으로 이어졌다.
The training with Takeshi Yamashima sensei(7th dan) and Chiyiodaku Aikikai is over. Yamashima sensei, 65 years old, is a student of the late Seigo Yamaguchi sensei, and he has a menkyo of ShinKage-ryu. The friendship firstly made by the vist of Ishibasi sensei's Fureai-juku and Chiyodaku Aikikai continued to Yoon sensei's visit to Kashima gasshuku, and returned by Yamashima sensei's visit.


역시 '백문이 불여일견이요, 백견이 불여일행'.
'One seeing is better than 100 times of asking, and One doing is better than 100 times of seeing.'

작은 키의 약간 풍채좋은 할아버지의 외양은 故야마구치 선생의 샤프한 그것과는 거리가 멀었지만, 표현하는 기술들은 그 스승의 것을 충실히 전하고 있음을 단숨에 알 수 있었다. (수련 후 회식자리에서도 故야마구치 선생의 이야기가 나오자 눈이 반짝이시는 모습에 스승에 대한 무한한 존경심을 느낄 수 있었다.)

Yamashima sensei's look as an ordinary old man with short height is not like the sharpness of the late Yamaguchi sensei, but you can see at once that he hands down what he learnt from his master.(At the party after the training, I could see his endless respect to Yamaguchi sensei when I talked of him.)

'유능제강'이란 말은 무도계에서 일반화되다시피 하였고, '유'에 대한 언어적 정의와 몸으로의 표현도 제각각이겠지만, 야마시마 선생의 기술을 받아본 느낌은 그야말로 부드러운 젤리 속에서 허우적대고 있는 듯한 것이었다. 참가자 중 한 사람은 '내 공격 자체가 사라져버리는 듯 했다'고 하였다. '몸에 닿는 순간 튕겨나가는', 혹자는 영화나 만화의 것으로만 여길 기술들을 직접 받아볼 수 있었다는 것은 행운이 아닐 수 없었다. 말씀이 나직하면서도 어찌나 빠르고 긴지 통역하기가 아주 까다로웠지만, 내용의 요지는 언제나 '허리(중심)의 콘트롤'.

The term 'the Softness can overcome the hardness' is heard everywhere in MA world, and everyone has its verbal definitions and bodily expressions, but I felt Yamashima sensei's techiniques like I was 'fallen in jelly and struglling to get out of it'. Another participant felt it like 'his attack itself has vanished'. I also felt lucky to feel 'the Bounce back as soon as you touch', which was thought that it's only in movies or manga. He spoke very silently but quick and long, made me very hard to interpret, but he always emphasized 'the control from your center.'


2년만에 만난 치요다구 합기회 회원들도 반가웠는데, 특히 아이고 씨와 고노 씨에게서 많은 조언을 얻어 그간 생각해오던 것들을 좀 더 실체화할 수 있었다. 앞으로도 좋은 인연이 계속 되길 바란다.
Very glad to see the students of Chiyodaku Aikikai in 2 years, especially I got many hints from Aigo-san and Kohno-san, very helpful for substantialization of what I was seeking. I really hope we can seek the path longer together.

후기를 쓸 때마다 최대한 객관적인 어휘를 사용하려고 해도 자신의 경험한 선생의 기술을 표현하는데 주관적인 어휘가 사용될 수 밖에 없어 곤란할 때가 있다. '드래곤볼'의 스카우터가 실제로 있다면야 상당히 편하겠지만.
Everytime I report, It's very hard to have it 'objectified' that I experienced. I really need a 'scouter' in 'Dragon-Ball'.

결론; 역시나 '마인 부'였고, '부드럽게 날 죽였다'.(<-사실 이번 후기는 이 한 문장만 쓰고 말려고 했음.)
Conclusion; Yup, he was 'Majin Boo', 'killing me softly'.( <- Frankly, this was the only sentence that I wanted to say.)

한 남자가 있다. 160cm 전후의 키에, 55세, 암 수술로 인해 위를 적출해서 1년 만에 20kg이 빠져버린 남자. 하지만, 그는 여전히 아이키도를 통해 육체적으로나 정신적으로나 '살아있다'.

그는 바로 카나야 히로타카 6단 선생이며 일본 아오모리에 위치한 이파이모리 도장의 도장장이다.(http://www.hi-net.ne.jp/~ipaimori/) 선생은 꼭 2년 전에 대한합기도회를 자신의 신분을 밝히지 않은 채 아무런 고지 없이 방문했다고 한다. 앤드류는 '두꺼운 팔뚝과 힘을 뺀 손을 가진 왜소한 중년의 남자였지만, 몸놀림만으로도 그가 아주 숙련된 유단자임을 알 수 있었다'고 이메일로 전해왔으며, 루퍼트 선생의 도움으로 그의 정체를 밝힐 수 있었다.

하지만, 나는 아직까지 그를 만날 기회를 갖지 못했다. 또한 놀랍게도 그의 암 수술 및 위장 적출 소식을 듣게 되었다. 그가 종전처럼 아무런 고지 없이 두 번째로 방문했을 때, 살이 너무 빠져서 아무도 그를 알아보지 못했다고 했다. 그는 그저 대한합기도회 사람들과 함께 운동하고 싶어서 비행기를 탔을 뿐이라고 했단다. 이 선생을 정말 만나고 싶었음에도 기회가 닿지 못해 안타까울 뿐이었다. 도대체 어떤 괴짜이길래.

마침내 지난 주말(2008/05/03-04) 서울 신설동 중앙도장 개관을 기념하여 열린 특별 수련에서 나는 그의 우케를 할 기회를 얻었다. 이미 언급하였듯이 그는 왜소한 중년으로 보일 뿐이었다. 하지만 그의 이완된 에너지는 너무나 근사함을 나는 '느낄' 수 있었다. 나를 놀라게 만든 것은 그저 기술만이 아니라, '어떻게 그가 이렇게 생기(生氣)가 넘치는가?'였다.

지금까지 만나온 모든 선생들은 내게 감동을 전해주셨다. 카나야 선생은 그의 존재로서 인간의 무한함을 보여주셨다. 신체적 장애를 갖고서도, 그는 나를 마치 장난감 다루듯 했다. 맞다, 내가 만난 모든 선생들이 나를 장난감 다루듯 했다. 하지만 어떻게 이 위장도 없는 조그만 아저씨가 그렇게 할 수 있단 말인가? 선생은 상대적으로 자신보다 훨씬 큰 내 체격을 보고 몇 번이나 농담을 하였다. 그는 언제나 웃음을 머금으며 농담을 던졌다.

감동에 거의 눈물이 나올 지경이었다. 그의 움직임과 말 하나 하나가 그가 자신에게 주어졌던 모든 것들을 받아들이고 극복했음을 보여주었다.

'저는 여기 여러분들을 가르치러 온 게 아닙니다. 윤 선생은 한국 최고의 아이키도가이며 일본의 선생들과 비교해도 매우 높은 레벨의 선생이십니다. 저는 여러분들을 이기려고 온 게 아닙니다. 만일 저를 이기려 마음먹으신다면, 저는 질 겁니다. 아무런 문제가 없어요. 저는 여러분들과 함께 수련하러, 여러분들과 함께 하러 왔습니다. 저는 전세계의 아이키도인들을 만나고 느끼길 좋아합니다.'

그와의 수련은 정말 훌륭한 경험을 안겨주었다. 선생을 만나고 느낄 수 있었던 것에 정말 행복하고 행운이라 생각한다. 선생은 이번 가을에 또 대한합기도회를 방문하실 예정이다. 선생의 '살아있음'을 꼭 느껴보길 바란다.

p.s. 선생이 해주신 재미있는 얘기 중 하나. 선생이 고교생 시절 처음으로 본부도장을 방문하였을 때 2대 도주 기쇼마루 선생의 양팔을 잡고 다짜고짜 발차기를 날리는 순간 던져졌는데, 아직도 어떤 기술인지 알 수 없다고. 그리고 즉시 카나야 선생의 양팔꿈치는 내제자들에 의해 부러졌다고.

Here's a person. About 160cm tall, 55 years old, and had a extracted stomach because of a cancer surgery, so that had lost 20kg within a year. But he is still 'ALIVE' not only physically but also mentally through Aikido.

He is KANAYA Hirotaka sensei, 6th dan from Ipaimori dojo in Aomori, Japan.(http://www.hi-net.ne.jp/~ipaimori/) He firstly visited KAF exactly 2 years ago without any notice of his identity which was soon to be unveiled. Andrew sent me an e-mail on his visit saying 'he was an small middle-aged man with thick forearms and relaxed hands, and looking his movement it was obvious he was a high-skilled yudansha, a black belt', so he searched and found his real identity with help of Rupert sensei.

But I haven't had an opportunity to meet him until this time. And suprisingly I was told he had got a surgery and had his stomach extracted. At his second visit with no notice as before, no one could tell it was him because of his tremendous loss of weight. He told that he just took a flight because he suddenly wanted to see and practise with us KAF. I was so eager to see him but always missed the chances. What a character he is.

Finally I served as his uke during last weekend special classes with celebration on the opening of the new KAF dojo in Sinseol-dong, Seoul. As I've mentioned above he looked as an tiny middle aged man. But his relaxed energy was so great, I could 'feel' it. It was not just a skill that surprised me, it was 'How he is so ALIVE?'.

Evrery sensei I've met has moved my heart with their technniques. Kanaya sensei showed me the no-limit of human-being with his presence. Physically handicapped, he played me like a toy. Yes, every sensei I've met have had played me like that. But how could this old man with no stomach do that? He joked serveral times with my physique relatively much bigger than him and had fun of me. He always smiled and joked.

I was almost moved to tears. All of his movement and saying showed that he accepted and overcame all he'd got.

'I am not here to teach you. Youn sensei is No.1 Aikidoka in Korea and also a very high-level sensei even comparing senseis in Japan. I am not here to win you all. If you want to win me, no problem, I will be lost. I am here to practice with you, to be with you. I just love to meet and feel Aikidokas all around the world.'

The practice with him was so beautiful experience, I feel so happy and lucky to have met and felt him. He is planning to visit KAF again this fall to be with us. You must feel he is ALIVE.

p.s. A story out of serveral funny stories of his own he told me. When he visited Hombu dojo for the first time as a high school student alone, he tried to kick Kisshomaru sensei, the 2nd Doshu grabbing his both arms without any notice during the class, and was thrown by a technique which he still doesn't know. And his both elbows were broken by angry uchideshies right then.
